Could An Air Purifier Help Improve Your Health?

Many people with chronic fatigue syndrome suffer from multiple chemical sensitivities including being sensitive to mold. This mold can be found in some of the food we eat e.g., aged cheese, yeast raised breads, processed meats and vinegar, and many people are sensitive to ingesting these molds. However, mold can also be found in our home environment and the air we breathe.

Different Types Of Mold

Approximately 1,000 different types of mold can be growing in our homes and they can be split up into 3 different classifications.

1.Toxic Molds – This type of mold produces mycotoxins which are capable of causing some seriously bad effects on your health. Toxic chemicals produced in this type of mold can be absorbed when they are inhaled and have been tied to suppression of the immune system.

2. Allergenic Molds – This type of mold is probably considered to be the least dangerous but can still cause issues for people with allergies to the specific mold or asthma.

3. Pathogenic Molds – This type of mold can cause infection which is problematic for anyone with a suppressed immune system.

Even people without chronic fatigue syndrome or multiple chemical sensitivities can benefit from having an air purifier in their home or workplace and studies show that a reduction in particulate matter and allergens can be successfully achieved by using efficient air purifiers.

How Do Air Purifiers Work For Mold Elimination?

Mold Spores Are Microscopic

Most mold spores are microscopic ranging from 3-100 microns in size. When looking for an air purifier to remove mold, it is important to choose one that removes at least 3-micron size particulates or smaller.

HEPA air purifiers are a good solution to remove mold spores from indoor air as it is one of the best technologies to combat mold. If your air purifier also has a charcoal filter, this also helps by eliminating any musty smells the mold produces.

hepa filter

While it is impossible to get rid of mold in your home completely, you can reduce it substantially. Removing mold is a continual process and even if you clean easily visible, more obvious sources of mold, the spores become airborne and cause problems for many people.

Whenever spores are disrupted they travel into the air and this is where using an air purifier can help greatly in cleaning up mold in your home environment.

So, what kills airborne mold spores? It is impossible for mold spores to reproduce without moisture and this is where an air purifier with HEPA filtration is effective. The spores are pulled into the air purifier and are trapped by the HEPA filter where there is no moisture present. Without any available moisture the mold spores cannot survive, and die.

Mold can be an invisible problem in most homes. We are all aware of the more obvious sources of mold, in the bathroom around the shower area, or in an obviously damp basement area. But mold can be invisible to the human eye and able to grow everywhere.

3 Important Points To Consider When Choosing An Air Purifier

1. FILTRATION – Definitely you should select an air purifier with HEPA filtration if your main concern is mold removal as HEPA filtration is an effective way to capture and eliminate mold spores.

2. AREA SIZE – You should consider the size of the area the air purifier is to cover.

3. FEATURES – If timer capability, alerts for when your filter needs to be changed or various fan speed selection is important you will need to pay a bit more for these features. Your budget is obviously an important aspect to consider when making your selection. The air purifiers in this review cover a broad price range so you can choose one to suit your needs and your budget.

The AeraMax uses PlasmaTRUE technology to indicate when you need to replace the HEPA filter. An AeraSmart sensor regulates the fan speed for the most effective operation.

4 Stage Purification

AeraMax has four-stage air purification:

Stage 1. During stage 1 the carbon filter catches all particles in the area and removes odors.

Stage 2. The HEPA filter removes airborne particles of 0.3 microns or larger during stage 2. This includes cigarette smoke, pet fur, mold, germs, pollen, dust mites and viruses floating in the air.

Stage 3. The AeraSafe antimicrobial treatment goes to work in stage 3 to inhibit bacterial growth in the HEPA filter.

Stage 4. During stage 4 the plasma true technology creates an ionized field to efficiently remove all contaminants from the air.

This four-step filtration system ensures your air is pure. To keep it this way you will have to change the HEPA filter around every six months and the carbon filter quarterly.

PlasmaTRUE technology

The purifier comes with an ionizer that produces negative ions which connects smaller particles together to make it easier for the filters to remove them from the air. You can turn this off if you have concerns about ionization.

AeraSmart sensor

Try to get rid if it by spraying vinegar, it stinks. Can’t imagine what is in the air that I cannot see. How do I find out what types of mold do I have in the apartment? The Rabbit Air Ultra Quiet looks promising to me. I like my room to be quiet, but will check all of them out. Thanks fo the list.

    • Hi Nuttanee, thanks for your comment. It’s good you’re only using vinegar to get rid of the mold in your bathroom as many commercial mold cleaners can include pretty toxic chemicals. To test which types of mold are in your home you can have this carried out by a professional who will analyze the type of mold. Or, you can buy mold test kits where you collect mold samples and send them to a lab. I agree with you, it’s important that your air purifier does not produce a distractingly loud noise.

    • Hi Allblue thanks for stopping by. Yes you can run the aircon at the same time as an air purifier. The aircon will cool the air down and the purifier will remove the nasties in the air. I run my purifier and aircon in my bedroom while I sleep as I live in a tropical climate.

If you are a light sleeper and don’t like seeing any lights in the room I would make sure to select a purifier which has the ability to be turned to quiet mode which also dims the lights on the unit too. For example, the Winix 5500-2 model has this function as do some of the others.

This is an issue that I’ve been struggling with a bit in my own apartment, and struggled with at my parent’s house in the past. I’ve had a number of different symptoms that I thought might be related to mold. Headaches, dry sinuses, a scratchy throat, allergy-like symptoms. I really want to look into an air purifier like this!

Do you know how essential oil diffusers are for your air’s health? I’ve been using one, and have found it helpful. Does this help clean the air at all, and is it healthy to breathe in during the night? I know that it adds moisture, for better or for worse.

    Thanks for your tips!

    • Hi Jordan thanks for checking out my post. Mold sensitivity can have all sorts of weird symptoms. I often diffuse essential oils, but if the air purifier is on it goes nuts, zooms up to super charge mode. I guess they are VOCs which the purifier recognizes and wants to clean from the air. So don’t waste your essential oils by diffusing them while your purifier is on.

Sorry to bother you, but I’m really interested in this topic because i always have pneumonia or flu. I’ve taken out time to read your post on air filters. Since, we can’t see this mold unless with the help of a microscope, how do we know if our air filters are still functional? Would we have to get different air filter for each room in the house?

I do hope to receive your feedback.

    • Hi Louis yes the mold spores are microscopic and fly around in the air in your home. Many of the air purifiers mentioned have indicators or apps that let you know when it’s time to clean or replace the filters. As advised in my post, one of the most important points about choosing the correct air purifier is to decide on the area size you need it to cover. If you choose an air purifier capable of covering a small area and use it for a much larger area, it will not be as effective.

I have a niece who is asthmatic, most of her crisis always results from allergies. It is interesting to see the process through which the Air purifier works. The technique is great because once the mold spores are pulled into the air purifier, they got trapped in the non moisturized area which virtually makes them to die as they can thrive where there is no moisture. I have really learnt a lot from your well researched article. Keep up the good work.

  18. I have always wondered at the effectiveness of air purifiers period and of course, whether they can harm your health rather than help it. This is why I decided to catch this post and see if I can be enlightened as to the reality of the subject. This is something for me and for my family, as we do use them in various areas of the house.

Man did I get an education here! The detail that you went into as far as filtration systems and what each does really hammers home the point that my wife was right (she is a big advocate of using air purifiers, even though the house is in a small community surrounded by farmlands. Normally you would think the air is pretty pure.

But as you rightly point out, molds are everywhere, and no matter how hard you work to keep them out, the spores are in the air. These purifiers you highlight all seem to address this to one degree or another. They all seem to be good options, I guess it depends on your personal needs depending on health and what you may be sensitive to.

Of the ones that you have highlighted, the best option for us is a couple of the Alen BreatheSmart Classic Large Room Air Purifiers. This one is large enough to cover an entire floor, so two would take care of our needs. I will be checking this one out and if the wife agrees, we will buy two. Thanks for the spot-on review, you have made my job easier!

    • Hi Dave thanks for leaving a comment. It seems you found my post helpful and you’ve made your selection. I think one of the important points to consider when choosing a purifier is the size of room you need it to cover. If you choose one that will not cover the area, the effectiveness of the purifier is reduced.

I’m really glad I came across your site because my son has chronic fatigue (which lead me to you), and we actually discovered mold along his baseboard in his room not too long ago.  His bed was up against the wall, and when we pulled it out to wash the floor, there was a thin layer of mold along the baseboard and the wall.  We scrubbed it all, called the landlord, he had his guy check it out and make sure the roof wasn’t leaking and it wasn’t.  So now we have his bed away from the wall to prevent a recurrence, but I’m thinking it might not be a bad idea to go ahead and get him one of these air purifiers.

    • Thanks for your comments and for stopping by again. I’m so glad my site provides useful information for your son. I’m a bit mold sensitive, I get very uncomfortable in damp or moldy places. Can’t even describe the feeling I get, but I think it’s my body’s way of telling me to get out of there. I think it could be a good idea to invest in an air purifier for your son’s room and see if it makes a difference to him. Even although you can no longer see the mold it might still be there in the air.

  22. Thank you for sharing ¨Could An Air Purifier Help Improve Your Health?¨And the answer is YES. At least in my case as asthmatic. I choose Rabbit Air Minus A2 Ultra Quiet HEPA Air Purifier. The pros, as you mention in your article, are: 1.Top notch performance. 2. Advanced Air Filtration process. 3. Smart Features like Smart Sensor and Wi-Fi  Connectivity function. 4. Ultra Quiet, and 5. 5-year warranty. The only CON is low CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) in mid-range segment. The Rabbit Air Minus A2 with low CADR rating as 200 Dust/193 smoke/208 Pollen (cfm),  might take more time to clean your room completely. Especially for a room of 815 sq. feet, this air purifier can only exchange the air once in 30 minutes, so you need to wait at least one hour for air cleaning progress. But overall, the Rabbit Air Minus A2 is by far the most complete on the market- I don´t regret my choice of picking up this air purifier

  23. The list of best air purifiers for mold removal is a really helpful one. I especially like the  Rabbit Air Minus A2 Ultra Quiet HEPA Air Purifier because of the size of room that it can cover and it removes not just molds but other allergenic particles with its 6 stage filtration. I am quite sensitive to particles so this really caught my attention. And I like that it is energy efficlient and can be controlled from my phone.

  24. Hi Ann,

What an educational article about molds and their removal. I learned from this article the three different types of molds.
One thing I like is how the article is laid out. Before presenting the product reviews, you gave some educational information about molds and what they can do to our health and their removal.
You also gave a thorough review on each product. For sure one can choose at least one product that is suitable for their needs.
I will definitely consider buying an Air Purifier for my home especially that my kids are asthmatic.
Thank you for this article. It truly helped me and I am sure that this will also help many people.

One of my rooms at home doesn’t have a musty smell but I feel it’s not as fresh as it could be and due to the humid climate I live in I think the issue is mold. Since I bought an air purifier, I run it at night whilst sleeping and notice my nose isn’t as stuffy in the morning. Hope my article helps you make your buying decision.

My second choice would be the AeraMax 300 Large Room Air Purifier because it is much cheaper but still able to accomplish air purification.

I believe every home needs an air purifier especially during winter since we cannot open our windows to let fresh air in.

  29. AIR purification has been an interest of mine for many years. Nice article set up. Easy to read and understand. A nice one stop shop approach. The information is timely and greatly needed. So many new homes suffer from a lack of air exchange since the heat saving, cooling issues have moved building tight enclosures. Mold is everywhere, however, when we get exposed to too much for too long we may end up with undesirable health issues. Air purification is part of the solution. Identifying the causes and eliminating or reducing mold growth potential is important to resolving the issue. Professional help may be necessary in many cases to bring circumstances under control, then purification will work its best. This is a nice go to place to shop. Good work.

Whilst doing the clean up an air purifier is a good preventative tool to insure disturbed mold spores are captured and eliminated too.

We bought 4 large area HEPA air purifiers with charcoal filters, and haven’t turned them off since the day we bought them. To test what a difference one can make, place one in a bedroom, turn it on high, and close the door. After a couple hours, step into the room and breathe. The difference in the air is amazing. It has helped my son greatly with his allergies.

The type of filtration you need is a major factor when choosing an air purifier, it’s important to work out what your exact needs are first, otherwise you could be simply wasting money. I never knew that mold could be in the foods we eat and air we breathe, I always thought it was only stuff that grew inside the house. I live in an old house and I wouldn’t be surprised if I have some mold floating around my rooms.

The Winix 5500-2 Air Purifier seems appropriate for me since I spend most of my time inside my small little home office. But maybe I should get a bigger one to cover the whole house. Anyway thanks for the reviews.

  45. I have two people in my circle of friends and family, both women, who have been diagnosed with CFS.

I know that one of them has a HEPA air purifier and the other doesn’t. The benefit of an air purifier is pretty obvious in that the friend with the purifier seems to recover from her bouts of exhaustion more quickly than the one who doesn’t.

I can’t say for sure how much the air purifier contributes to Judy’s recovery time. But  I’m willing to bet it’s reasonably significant.

I’m going to recommend that Brenda visit this website and consider getting an air purifier of her own. I think it may help, and it certainly wouldn’t hurt, cleaning up the air of pollutants as it does!

There is quite a big difference with the 5 choices, for the amount of space you are hoping to purify. A person really needs to read your post before buying one.

I didn’t realize that simply keeping the spores in a moisture-free area would kill them; that’s amazing. These are especially beneficial, I think, if you live in an older building. We don’t really need one in our apartment. Maintenance comes around on a regular basis and examines the place for mold; any findings would result in the use of horrible chemicals. Thank you for publishing this!

I’ve been in the market for an air filtration system and, with so many options out there, haven’t been sure which way to go.

The area I’m looking to clean is an upstairs apartment basically.  It has a bedroom, walk-in closet, kitchen and living room. It’s about 900 square feet total.  There are also stairs down to my office which is about 120 square feet.  Here are my questions…  Do I need two or three units or will one mega-unit do the job?  Am I better off with one upstairs and one downstairs or do I need two upstairs, etc.?

I just want to be sure I’m doing it right.  I look forward to your reply.

    • Hi and thanks for your comment. Air purifiers work in the room where they are located, so you are better to buy a couple of units. Perhaps you could rotate them, most are lightweight and easy to move around. Take note of each room size and select your air purifier accordingly as matching the unit to your room size is one of the more important aspects to ensure your air purifier works effectively.

I always gauge the quality of air by pollutant particles and never actually considered mold as one. Where I live is hot and humid so the prevalence of mold is certainly there.

Guess there’s more function to the machine than I thought. Thanks for the quick education.

    • I agree, there are so many air purifiers on the market which don’t all work efficiently. You really need to identify your main problem first and buy a purifier to suit. I also live in a year round humid climate, so understand how mold can grow even though you can’t really see it. In this type of climate it is a constant battle to keep clothes, shoes etc., mold free.

My apartment has “damp” or moist places especially around the window frames since it’s really cold outside but of course we have a heater to keep the rooms warmish. I also have a freshwater aquarium that I have been having trouble keeping completely clean but since it’s currently (and temporarily) overstocked it does put off an unpleasant odor at times. Anyways what I want to know is which air purifier would be the best one for a person on a tight budget? I need one to clean mold spores, smells, pollen and pet hair (dog) out of the air but not cost me a fortune. Thanks for any suggestion on which way to go with this, appreciate your help.

  65. Hello Ann. I really enjoyed this article. You clearly got me.

We have a problem with molds on our house. Thanks to you I learned that the mold is not only found on the walls or in the air, but also on our clothes or food. We used to go to the country at the weekend and come back with lots of food. It seems that it was loaded with mold and created new problems for us.

To get rid of it all,  I’ll buy the AeraMax 300 Large Room Air Purifier. The 240$ price i think is nothing if we can eliminate the risk of getting sick with the lungs.

Thanks a lot and best wishes to you !

  66. Hey thank you for the great post!  I have two kids right now and I have been considering an air humidifier.  I really like the Winix 5500-2 Air Purifier With True Hepa because it has all the features I need in a humidifier and it looks nice.  I like that it is black too because my little boy likes to get everything he touches dirty!

    • Haha! Good to hear the color is important to you too. In reviewing all of the available air purifiers for mold I was thinking how ugly so many of them look. Luckily there are some better looking more streamlined models out there.

  67. Wow, this is a very good post that really shows here how to deal with issues relating to getting good air. I like the fact that you could come up with a mention on the different types of pollutants in the air. Out of all these that you have shared here, I fell like I will really need to buy the Winix 5500-2 Air Purifier With True Hepa. Looks like the best here. Nice work!

  68. Hi, mold is a thing that we unfortunately have to take the time to learn and understand, so we can deal with it better.

Being that I just moved into my condo, I installed a fan in my bathroom that turns on every time I turn on the light. My parents say that having a fan in the bathroom will prevent mold, that can accumulate in bathrooms from the humidity or whatever.

I have heard that air purifiers are beneficial for people living in shared accommodations, such as apartments, and condo’s, where people may smoke cigarettes. I used to have a air purifier at my old apartment for that reason. I also found the filter to be easier to clean then I expected. I only cleaned it once per year.

The technology has improved sense that time though, and these things are getting better and better by the year. Just like everything else is advancing technologically, so are these things.  Like you said, area size is important, and another thing is the sound.

Check out the reviews (preferably from this site) and make sure that it is nice and quiet, so it doesn’t annoy you.

    Thanks

  69. I’m just beginning research on Chronic Fatigue and wasn’t aware of the implications of mold in living spaces and various affects on health.  I appreciate your explanation of mold types and especially this assessment of top 5 filtration systems.  I imagine those people diagnosed with fybromyalgia would also benefit from testing of mold in their home?

And in any case, installation of air filtration would be a good preventive measure to reduce or eliminate one possible cause of these conditions.  Thank you for this information and guidance!

  70. Oh my this is very good. I have learnt about the importance of using a very good air purifier from the fitness center where I go to train everyday. Today, you have further explained this and also gone on to give some very good purifiers and how they work too. This is very nice. I would very much like to try one.

  71. Hi thanks for the article on air purifiers. My bathroom at home has no ventilation, theres no window and the fan is not very good so because of this mould is starting to form on the ceiling in our bathroom. I was concerned about the health risks that the mould could cause and wasn’t sure what to do. I came across your article and now have some ideas on how to fix the problem.

    • Hi there like you I have a walk through closet with poor ventilation and this area definitely had a mold issue until I bought an air purifier. It made a huge difference, so hopefully you will have similar success.

  72. I understand the point of an air purifier and I’m guessing daily vacuuming would be the initial form to clean a room but would a purifier need to be running 24/7 to work effectively. We use one but just for 2 hours at a time (on timer) and have it on mostly at night in a bedroom when we’re sleeping in it.

Do they really need to be kept running all night to work effectively? I’m concerned about my electricity bills being really high

  73. I’ve been searching for an air purifier for a while now, but there are so many to choose from that I couldn’t decide, so I love that you have only the best here!

I’ll probably get BreatheSmart. It’s quiet and it covers a large area, plus you can get it in Rosewood which is perfect for my house!

    • Thanks for visiting. I agree there are just SO many air purifiers around and it can be confusing to know which one will fit your needs. This is what prompted me to write this post. If you are dealing with health issues caused by mold the right air purifier can go a long way in helping you achieve symptom relief.

  76. Hi Ann,

Your contents speaks directly to one of the most important concerns for humans… nay…mammals – namely the very air that we breath.  And even though I don’t have chronic fatigue syndrome at present, it reminded me to not take my home and health for granted.

I have to say that I really like the cool, sleek, somewhat futuristic design and appearance of the Alen BreatheSmart.  My family members can often be almost overly sensitive to household odors.  So, the optional added filters feature is certainly noteworthy for consideration against the other models.  As it offers another level of customization for individual household needs.  Kudos for the great review of it!

  77. Hello Ann!

These mold purifiers are a very good idea, especially for those of us who suffer from diseases like asthma or any type of allergy, and who need a clean air in the space they live their daily life.

But speaking in general, if we breathe an unclean air, our lungs will get reasons to suffer over the time.

IQ Air and Alen Breathe Smart are excellent choices to make, in my opinion, due to their top coverage areas. Well, having to change the HEPA filter once or twice a year requires some extra work, this applies also to vacuum cleaners that contain such a filter. But the outcome (a sanitized air to breathe) makes that extra effort worth it!

    Best regards,

    Peter
