Is Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Real?

Unfortunately for sufferers, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity is very real and can also be part of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

Multiple chemical sensitivity can include a wide and varied range of symptoms and is also known as  “Idiopathic Environmental Intolerance”, “Environmental Illness” and “Multiple Allergy Syndrome”.

Whatever you want to call it, this heightened immune reaction to the many chemicals that surround us can make life very difficult if you are affected by it.

The EPA states that our indoor living and working environments are up to five times more toxic than the outdoor environment. The effect of this is scary when you realize that average Americans spend approximately 90 percent of their time indoors rather than outside.

They also state that the concentration of some indoor pollutants has increased in recent times. Factors such as using synthetic building materials and the use of energy efficient building materials when lacking in sufficient ventilation for adequate air exchange,  contribute to indoor pollution.

Additionally,  synthetic materials used in our home and office furnishings, household cleaning products, and personal care products are manufactured using synthetic chemicals and contribute to the mix of chemicals we expose ourselves to daily.

What Are The Symptoms Of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity?

Doctors are often baffled by the many and varied symptoms sufferers of multiple chemical sensitivity present with. The symptoms include:

  • Sinus/Congestion/Sneezing/Sore throat
  • Digestive upset
  • Ongoing fatigue
  • Chest Pain
  • Cough
  • Wheezing and breathing issues
  • Itchy and burning eyes
  • Heart palpitations
  • Cognitive issues – brain fog/confusion/forgetfulness
  • Headache
  • Itchy skin and rashes
  • Sensitivity to noise and light
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Nausea
  • Muscle and joint aches

What Can Be Done To Reduce Indoor Pollution?

The good news is that luckily, there are some very powerful air purifiers on the market that help make life with multiple chemical sensitivity more tolerable. They are designed specifically to remove chemicals, VOCs and allergy causing particles from the air indoors.

The bad news is that you have to make sure you pick one that is right for you to ensure it does the job you need it to. Unfortunately some of the cheaper air purifiers on the market just won’t cut it when it comes to getting rid of the indoor pollutants and VOCs causing your chemical sensitivities. Generally speaking if you buy a cute little desk air purifier for under $100, don’t expect great results with symptom relief.

3 Important Point To Consider When Choosing An Air Purifier For Multiple Chemical Sensitivities

  1. High Volume Of Carbon Used – Removing a large volume of chemicals from the air during a long period of time effectively, requires a large volume of activated carbon within the air purifier. This is why a dainty slimline desktop style air purifier won’t work for multiple chemical sensitivities. You need a sufficient quantity of carbon which needs to be contained within a larger sized purifier.
  2. Size Of The Area – Consider your room size and the area the purifier is to work in. If you choose an air purifier designed to work in a small space, it will not be effective if you are using it within a space larger than the recommended use.
  3. Components Used – Lower grade plastics can off-gas chemicals and cause irritation even while the purifier is filtering air chemicals. The air purifier you choose should be manufactured from metal or premium grade plastic components to avoid possible irritation from chemicals within the purifier itself.

1. Allerair 6000 Exec UV Air Purifier

The Allerair 6000 is a general-purpose air purifier that can clean a large space of up to 1800 square feet. It is ideal for not only removing odours but for people with allergies, chemical sensitivities and asthma.

This air purifier removes chemicals, dust mites, pollen, viruses, bacteria, microscopic particles, gases and dust from your environment.

Its round barrel shape comes on wheels to make it easy to move around.  It cleans a room at a rate of 400 cubic feet a minute and changes the air in your home twice every hour to filter out those nasty chemicals. The construction is all metal with no vapors from plastic and comes in 3 color choices.

The Allerair has three filters and a UV lamp to sterilise airborne bacteria and viruses. It has multi-stage filtration using a filter compound. This includes an anti-bacterial pre-filter, medical grade HEPA and a MAC-B mass activated 22lbs carbon filters that provides extra strength protection. It also has a tar trap filter.

You need to change the carbon filter every 2.5 years, the pre-filters every two months and the HEPA filter every five years. As with all filter changing recommendations, this depends on the environment the purifier is working in and how often it is operating.

It has three speed settings and only uses 95 W of power on the highest speed. The highest setting is best when you want to remove pollens, dust, hair and other airborne pollutants. On this is high setting it draws the air in faster and goes through the HEPA filter with greater force.

Using this high setting is perfect for a quick fix if you come home and want to clean the air as quickly as possible. However, the Allerair 6000 is just as effective on the lower setting running all the time as this lower setting provides a continuous flow of purified air. This lower setting is useful for use in the bedroom when you need a quiet sleep.

  1. Hello! I was a bit confused when I saw multiple chemical sensitive as your headline, however, reading through your post made me understand that it is simply the same thing as environmental illness I do know about. I can relate well to this post, because I do react to some of these chemicals sometimes by constant sneezing or experience sore throat.

I could never have associated environmental illness with ongoing fatigue. It is saddening to see that the major cause of this health issue is as a result of synthetic materials and some household cleaning products. I am happy to know that air purifiers can help in removing chemicals and allergy causing particles from the air indoors.

Great tips on factors to look out for while purchasing air purifier.

    • Hi thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. Sorry if you were confused by the title of my post, but MCS is known by a couple of names. Unfortunately, nowadays we are surrounded by chemicals in our home and work environments, but the right air purifier can help greatly in removing the chemicals we react to.

  2. I have to be honest with you, I found it really scary that inside the house is actually considered more air polluted than our outside environment. With the fact that a lot of people spend a lot of their time inside the house makes this even scarier. Staying in a place that is properly ventilated can actually go a long way in making the air inside the house to be fresh.

The air fresheners we even make use of adds to polluting the air instead of keeping it fresh. Getting an air purifier is definitely the way to go and from these selections, it seems the Allerair 6000 Exec UV Air Purifier is exactly what I need.

  4.  I have been physically struggling for almost a year now, steadily getting worse and worse, with crazy strong anxiety and panic attacks, sugar and caffeine sensitivity out of the blue, and EXTREME low energy and tiredness constantly. Now all of a sudden the crazy sleep pattern started last week. Anyway, I have heard the phrase Adrenal fatigue syndrome before but never knew what it was. So I saw the section on your website about it and clicked on it to read about it for fun. Little did I know that the information was about to change my life! You have no idea how greatful I am to you for your information on this syndrome. As I read the article, especially the symptoms, I felt as if I was reading my life outloud! 6. I had never even heard of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, so this is quite intriguing. I must say, learning that our indoor living and working environments are far more toxic than outdoors has come as a shock. I had always assumed that fresh air and exercise were bound to kill you (seriously). Therefore, as far as I’m concerned, the jury is still out about exercise, but clearly I need to get out more.

To make matters worse, I actually have several of these symptoms! I am a little saddened that apparently I’m going to need to spend more than $100 for a purifier, but at least your reviews will come in handy now, so thanks for that.

Yowzah! Over a $1000?! (I’ve just been on Amazon.) How about if I just keep the window open?

I have been congested for months now and it does not seem to go away, I sneeze, I am always tired the one thing that got me was the eye symptoms. I have always had these issues with my eyes, sometimes they are so sensitive that I cannot keep them open. Perhaps it is all a coincidence or perhaps I need to look into what can be the cause of multiple chemical sensitivity in my case. I used to have an air purifier but not for a while, perhaps I should look into purchasing one again. Air purifiers sure have a lot of good benefits, especially in this scenario. 23. Wow this is the first I’ve heard of this syndrome but a very good thing to know, very interesting that it leads to fatigue.  My question though would be how much energy does it use up running these, and do you need to keep it going all the time?

Also what is the up keep for having one of these in the home, what parts need to be replaced and could they be a fire hazzard?

    Reply
    • Thanks for stopping by. General information about air purifiers states the energy used is less than a lightbulb or a computer, so they are pretty energy efficient.

Regarding parts needing replacement, all air purifiers have filters that need to be replaced to keep them working efficiently. Each model has different requirements for this. Some have washable filters while for others you need to buy replacement filters. As regards being a fire hazard  as long as you are buying from a reputable brand this is unlikely to be an issue.

  24. My personal preference is the Airpura C600 Air Purifier. When I was living in a condo, the neighboring units use plugin fragrance oil that caused me severe headaches. At first, I thought it was a migraine caused by my over-consumption of coffee. But then, after I stopped drinking coffee, the headache persisted. So, I consulted my doctor and recommended I buy one of these air purifiers. It happened that I bought this one online, and since then, I no longer have those monster headaches.

  25. It’s sad to see that our indoor environments are way more toxic than outdoor, and for me I try to spend as much time outdoors as I can. I like your list of air purifiers, and since I live in a mid-sized apartment, the IQ Air GCMultias would be sufficient enough for me. I also think the best thing to do is to supplement an air purifier with using more natural cleaning products rather than mainstream products, which I’ve always called cancer in a bottle. I wish my day job would invest in these as well, since we’re exposed to chemicals all day long.

Before I found this article, I don’t know how different the air purifiers are. After reading, the human body seems to be really helpful.

Currently the pollen is visible if you touch a tree. You can see the pollen coming off the tree in a great cloud. Our homes are our castles and thinking about the amount of pollen and dust that comes through the doors and windows does give one pause. Especially those with late in life allergies.

I do like the way you have presented the product. It is a unique and timely product to promote as we are all becoming much more aware of the pollutants in our environment.

Air purifiers are fantastic for allowing them to gain some relief from some of the symptoms you mention in the article and allow some peace. You have detailed some great options and provided great information to allow visitors to. Make educated decisions regarding which unit would be right for them. Keep up the good work!

I really like the Austin Air Healthmate due to it’s modern look and that it has 4 stages of filtration, although I’m not sure I need something that will clean up 1500 sq ft, I just need something smaller for my tiny 200sq ft home office, maybe I’ll check out my Blueair Classic 205 instead. 34. This review of the best air purifiers for addressing multiple chemical sensitivity that some people suffer with is useful even for those that do not manifest symptoms I think. Everyone is affected by this to a lesser or larger degree, and it cannot be good for anyone.

It is an unfortunate truth too that these chemicals are found in the homes these days, and especially the newer ones that are sealed so much tighter than older homes are (for energy savings) this is the case. I think back when we moved into our newly built house years ago, and the chemical smells were everywhere.

From the moment we moved in, we purchased air purifiers and used them on every level of the house, and we had large ones that covered the entire space on each floor (4 levels). At that time, it helped to get rid of the chemical smells and we have kept them ever since.

We do have to replace these from time to time, and it is good to know that advances in technology have also entered the air purifier products that are available these days. Of the best options you have listed, the one that catches my eye is the first, the Allerair 6000 Exec UV Air Purifier.

That has the capacity to cover the large spaces I need, and two would take care of the entire house versus the 4 I am using now. It also does not use that much power, there is an acceptable period between maintenance/replacement requirements of the filters, and it is made of metal.

The others also seem to be top-notch options, but I think we will use the Allerair model for the next replacements, I am pretty satisfied with that model. It is a good idea for every household to get some kind of an air purifier these days, whether people realize it or not, as there are likely more pollutants inside houses these days than in the air outside.

I think people should use air purifiers rather than air fresheners. Just a thought.

  41. I think the fact that so many people spend 90% of their time indoors, as you highlight in your review, is as much of a cause of the problem as the pollutants in the air they breath.

Yes, we’re exposed to things like car exhaust fumes, industrial pollution, etc, on a daily basis and the chemicals we come across indoors from things like every day household cleaners, are also a factor. I do wonder how it is, when tighter regulations are coming in all the time to combat pollution and restrict the use of harmful substances in every day items of use, the problem seems to be getting worse.

If we can’t avoid these things, then I can see how air purifiers would help a great many people, but as with anything else, there is so much choice out there it’s very difficult to make an informed buying decision. This review certainly helps with that and some of the products you’ve should look like great value.

    • Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. It is true that tighter regulations seem to be ongoing, but maybe the issue is that so many new chemicals seems to be introduced too. We are definitely surrounded by them in our homes. Hope this info., gives you enough to go on to make the right choice.

  42. After reading your review on the Hydro Flask Water Bottle I was impressed and decided to have a wander through your site. This article immediately piqued my interest and I’m glad I found it. Sometimes you put ‘stuff’ happening down to ‘one of those things’ I am first up every morning and as such, enjoy a quiet house and no queues for the bathroom. During this time there is the high possibility that my eyes will start watering and I will have a sneezing fit. I have never really given it much thought until I read your article. Many years ago I must have read something about cleaner air in the house, as I really wanted to get one of those ‘Ionisers’, just for the bedroom, I never did. Now I might be considering something better equipped to deal with the multitude of chemicals that we breathe on a daily basis, in the comfort of our own home. The Blueair Classic 205 caught my eye as maybe something to try in the bedroom at first and see if there is a noticeable improvement, I’m sure there will be. Just not having a sneezing fit will be worth the cost.

  44. HI,

I am actually doing research on what could actually be causing so many issues I have. Initially, I thought I have food allergies. Though not life-threatening, I believe I have dairy allergies, maybe some nuts and soy. Oh and alcohol too. I get occasional itchy patches on my skin when I have eaten any of these foods. I can tell you its debilitating.

I am also asthmatic, I sneeze at everything under the sun, red itchy eyes, sinuses, you name it.

Now here is my question if you may help me. Would you say that I need air purifier or something else?

I have gone to see the “Allergist” and please don’t get me started on that one. No help at all!

    I’m itchy!

    • I hear you, identifying any type of allergy or sensitivity can be difficult and time consuming. As you mention you can be sensitive to ingested allergens and/or inhaled allergens. One way to know is to have extensive testing carried out. Once you have identified what exactly is causing your ‘itchiness’ then you can take action, including buying an air purifier if needed.

  45. Hello, this is Boniface

For me this is a very important topic that you have handled here and it certainly affects general health as well as ENT, and chest/breathing issues.

I’ve read in the past that air purifiers are risky and so I’ve always been reluctant to consider one. But is this a myth? They especially say ozone removers and air ionizers are particularly of concern. Please clarify.

Filter based purifiers do not seem to be harmful, though. So i’ve noted that your choice products  (Allerair, Austin Air, and Purair) are well worth of looking into.

    Thanks again

    • Thanks for your comment. Ozone in high concentrations can neutralize smoke smells e.g., from fire damage. But, according to the EPA the use of an ozone air purifier can be dangerous, causing lung damage. It can also make symptoms of asthma worse.

And ozone levels within safe standards are ineffective in removing indoor air contaminants, mold and viruses. So as you mention, filter type air purifiers are a more effective and safer option.

Looking down your list of,symptoms I can see that our house could do with one of these machines,as I counted nine of them, showing that although we live in the country, the air is not that pure.

Checking out the prices, versus the area covered, the AIRPURA C600 seems to be the best buy at 2000 square feet coverage for $849.00,with it’s three filter system, and it’s low noise levels.

Because of that, I don´t buy particle board furniture, because they contain formaldehyde. I didn’t know there are air purifiers like those you reviewed available. An air purifier might be helpful, because there will always be some chemicals in the house, even if you avoid materials with lost of chemicals.

  59. Because our house is located in a densely population place, we didn’t have a choice about the design of the house. So, what happened is, we got a house that don’t have enough windows for ventilation. And the effect of it is, indoor air pollution. The air pollution level inside our house is I think is too high as my elderly parents are getting sick too often like sneezing and coughing, most related to allergy because of indoor pollution.

To get rid of the problem, we use powdered charcoal placed in a saucer to absorb impurities in the air, but this option is very tiring. We often find ourselves looking for charcoal to use, and in an urban place like ours, charcoal suppliers are very rare.

Thanks for the list, it would be better if we will just use one of the air purifiers listed here to have a hands-free solution to this problem.

Of course you really need to work out firstly what your main reasons for using an air purifier are and make your selection making sure the air purifier you choose addresses your particular concerns. The other important point is selecting a purifier that will cover the size of the area it will be used in.

Air pollution is a very very serious problem these days.

I was really surprised when I heard about a story about London.

At the time when London was fogged, no one doubted about if it was air pollution.

Consequently, many people died because of that unknown fog, which is called smog after that time.

I always put a mask on my face when I go out because I don’t want to be in the hospital.

Well, Air Purifier is a good choice to prevent air pollution from ruining your body.

The models listed in this post could be considered top of the range as they effectively purify the air for people who have severe allergies to chemicals etc.

So, which one do you consider the best?

    • Hi and thanks for stopping by. As mentioned in my post one of the most important points to consider is the size of the area you want your air purifier to cover to ensure it works effectively.

You mention you live in a small apartment, perhaps if you want to use the purifier in one room the Blueair Classic 205 would suit you as it covers an area of up to 279 sq’. However, you need to check your room size. From my list, this is the air purifier that will cover the smallest area.

  66. Hi Ann
I currently looking for an air purifier since both of my sons always get flu and cough. I think this is due to the construction site near my house. I think Austin Air Healthmate Plus HM250 is the best one suite for my home since it has 4 stages of filtration.

Thanks for taking your time and put all these together. Definitely worth bookmarking this page for future use. I will definitely come back here for reference.

    Thanks

  67. The law of attraction is authentic Ann, and I was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome ten years okay. But never acknowledged it and it got worse I had stages of hugely high energy and days on end bed-bound depressed in pain. I got a teacher’s degree and then felt the pressure and stress so in turn would go to the doctor to take sick days. I think the world laughed in my face and gave me baffled looks even from my own family and friends even though they knew when diagnosed. My lifestyle only just had an overhaul I found exercise a preventive measure. Society is contributing to the illness all the time as you have pointed out. I have enjoyed this page and will be contacting you again in the future as your ideas on homeopathy, herbal medicine, nutritional supplements, and diet progressing and putting the body back to a balanced state are incredible. 68. Hi, it’s awesome I landed on your website, living healthy being an important lifestyle, I guess there quite dozen of people

who have no idea about Environmental illness and multiple allergy syndrome.

It’s quite absurd how this days, our environment has become more toxic,  especially  the synthetic materials used in our homes and offices.

The products we use are manufactured using synthetic chemicals which contribute to the mix chemicals we expose ourselves daily.

congrats for educating as on how we can live healthy and doing a good job to provide products that reduce pollution in our environment and that’s part of living healthy.

It’s quite educational article you have and we need more of this.

But sure, it’s expensive, and for a common home use, it is not for everyone. However, I do need a medical grade air purifier to have the best deliverance from allergies like smoke. I’m glad I came across this, and the thanks Goes to you.

  70. Hello Ann,

I can relate to the multiple chemical sensitivity and chronic fatigue as I am a type 2 diabetic. Until you actually figure out what the problem is and in my case diabetes and how to reverse it you are stuck, and the diabetes will not go away.

Same as if you are breathing toxic chemicals that will ultimately be filtered by the liver and kidneys in your body and will lead to all sorts of chronic conditions. I could see the toxic chemicals and air adding to insulin resistance.

Now that you also mention this my wife has a mucus problem and always has mucus build up in her throat and nose. It has been on going for the last 10 years or so. I wonder if this could be related?  She has been to her doctor and a couple of specialist but they say it is normal. No it is not normal because it is not happening to me, something is not right.

    What do you think?

I like the Air Purifiers, a bit pricey, but if you need it you must have it.

    Very informative information.

    Thanks .

    Jimmy.

However, if you weigh the health benefits for someone with MCS and the symptom relief they get the initial outlay is worth it.

Your wife could have an allergy to something either ingested or inhaled. Have you thought of going to an allergist or naturopath? If I eat/drink dairy I get a build up of mucous, but it can be caused by many other substances too.

Most areysol sprays I can not even use anymore as it makes my asthma worse. I can also agree that being outside is a lot better than in the house, however I didnt realize that it has actually been studied I found this highly interesting. I have a small apt now what air purifier would you recommend for small living space?

Our home has a zig-zag type design to it, with 4300sf shared on 4 levels. The only air purifier you have listed that comes close to filtering this square footage is the Airpura 600. Would you suggest that we purchase 4 smaller sized air purifiers, one for each level? Or would 2 larger air purifiers suffice for the entire house?

Thanks for your recommendations and input, we appreciate it!

    • Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. A multi level home could prove challenging for just a couple of purifiers. I think you would need to buy a few to cover the area you need. Otherwise, just buy a couple and use them in the areas you are currently in.

  73. Hi

I am very grateful to read such an educative and informative post about air purifier for multiple chemical sensitivity. It is very helpful for me because I am suffering from sinus for 5year. It is very harmful for my body fitness. I can not go anywhere like other people. But I never know about such a great invention like this. I should use the air purifier in my house. It will make me more comfortable than before.

Blueair Classic 205 is my best choice for it’s uniqueness and the features.I will take this one of course.

I will share your this informative post with my friends and family so that they also can prefer it like me.

Thanks for sharing your experience in Multiple Chemical Sensitivity and Best Of Air Purifiers for Multiple Chemical Sensitivity sufferers.

I have previously diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, but this is the first time I heard about Multiple Chemical Sensitivity and the associated symptoms. Of course, I experience some of the listed symptoms, but now I am bit confused if it’s because of  Multiple Chemical Sensitivity or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome itself.

When I consider the size of the area, Blueair Classic 205 seems a good fit for me.

    Thanks.

So, for this purpose I am going to be making this 4 IQAir GC Multigas Air Purifier into consideration and will definitely choice it.As based on your review, its functionality are able to remove more than 35 chemicals from the environment, As well as its Four-stage filtration illustrates that this one works great to reduce more Bactria from the air. Also glad to know that we need to change the HEPA filter annually and the cartridges and post filters need replacing every 4 years when we use the IQAir for an average of 10 hours a day.

I, and several loved ones, have suffered from this. I’ve used air purifiers in the past, while living with my parents, and found them helpful. But I have yet to invest in one for my own home. Could you give me a rough average of what a decent air purifier would cost? The ones you recommend sound highly effective, as long as my budget can meet them.

  78. Having an air purifier that is effective and does not cost an arm and a leg can be a lifesaver for those that suffer from multiple chemical sensitivity disorders. I have a grandson that suffers from such intolerance, and we have had to make sure that we have one in the villa all the time for him.

You have included many options that are available with a broad range of capabilities and prices, but it seems that most will do the trick for our needs. I will have to look at the capacity for coverage, as the villa is quite large and has two floors. I may just get two to replace the one we are using now (it is on its last legs).

Of the models you reviewed, it seems to me that the IQAir GCMultigas Air Purifier will be perfect (I will need two) as it does cover a large area and filters out so many chemicals that are found in houses these days. I checked the Amazon site and the price is what I expected and I get free delivery too.

There were some suggested lower-priced options that Amazon listed, but for the requirements I have, the price is okay. Buying two will put a dent in the wallet, but it is my grandson, and I do not want to have him experience any medical problems when he visits us. Thanks for the review and advice!

  80. I seriously need to consider one of these in my workplace. I work in a vet clinic – lots of dirt, hairs and harmful chemicals laying around all day. Although the management tries to keep things clean, they never considered installing anything like that to keep the staff’s health at bay. Sleep difficulties and heart palpitations are just some of the symptoms I experienced on a daily basis and thought they were associated with work stress. Now I think it could be something else in the air.

There are so many things to watch out for these days, but most people do not realise that your home could be causing a lot of the irritations they might be experiencing. I find winter to be a particular time of the year where symptons are more noticeable, obviously because we are inside more. I definately will be taking a further look into the purifiers.

  82. This is very timely because right now, me and my son are having allergic rhinitis. Among the symptoms of Multiple chemical sensitivity, I must say that members of our family often experience cough, congestion and sneezing, breathing issues, itchy and burning eyes, headache, rashes, and in the case of my son – sensitivity to light and noise. No matter how I keep the house clean from dust, there isn’t a single day that one of us would experience the said symptom. Now I know it has something to do with indoor pollutants. We don’t have much ventilation because windows and doors are always closed.

As I was reading your recommended air purifiers, I simply think all have great features and materials. IQ Air GC multi gas is my top choice because of it has 4 stage of filtration and can cover a large room. Not that I have a big house but at least it can filtrate the living and dining room at once. Blue Air classic 205 however is best for bedrooms and can be controlled through mobile app.

Thanks for sharing information about indoor pollution. It’s really scary once you know it.

I’m definitely considering getting a proper air purifier after reading your post. The IQAir GCMultigas Air Purifier seems like a good choice. given the large space coverage and the long list of chemicals it can remove.

  87. Air pollutants generally, have increased dramatically recently, due to toxins,in the air due to fossil fuels, and as we have seen lately, in the tremendous bush fires in the Amazon basin,as well as pollutants,in the seas from plastic bags, and indiscriminate dumping of chemicals, and waste by commercial companies.

But the shock to find that, indoor pollution is five times worse than outdoors, that the use of synthetic ,and energy efficient building materials is also a contributing factor, made worse by insufficient ventilation,is an eye opener, and also that our household, and personal care products, are all contributing factors in this state of affairs.

So we come to find that the solution seems to be in getting an air purifier, and it seems we need to pick one that will be best for our home and it’s size, and for our family

The air purifier that I would choose for our family and the size of our house, would be the Airpura C600 ,it’s capacity is sufficient,it is portable so it can be moved around,it has variable speeds,to help clear the air quickly if need be,and the optional UV lamp is a good bonus.

I wouldn’t go for the Blue Air Classic 205 as it is only big enough for one room,it would be ok for a flat or a bedsitter, but it is too small for a house

It is really undeniable to take notice of the level of air pollution we have all around and the negative it is having on us and the only way to counter this is to ensure we do everything possible to make the air as pure as we can. Thankfully, technology has developed to the stage where it can be used to do virtually everything. Hence, there is the urgent desire to make use of it to clean the air too. The air purifiers that are listed up here are all cool and they all have exceptional qualities and features but the one I like most is the Airpura C600. Thanks

We always hear so much about outside air pollution, I guess a lot of us never considered that inside pollution could be even worse. 96. Wow, this is so helpful thank you! I am a health coach and well aware of the effects of environmental toxins. A compromised immune system doesn’t have a chance, especially in the home where one of the most dangerous chemicals are sprayed directly on your furniture and mattress as flame retardants. I know quite a few people who have severe illnesses and they have no idea it has everything to do with “invisible” toxins. Even being overweight is a result of toxins because our bodies filtration systems become blocked. The excess toxins are then stored within the body because they cannot be eliminated. This is what you may know as visceral fat, covering your major organs so that they do not absorb the toxins. Great job with detailed explanations of high quality air filters, thank you!

She used to have an air purifier, but I think it would be much older by now. I’ll show her your post to see if she’s in the market for a newer and better model.

My part-time job requires me to use chemicals to clean homes.  While I have always despised the necessity of having to use chemicals to clean others’ homes, I don’t use chemicals in my home.  I’ve found natural and organic products that we use in our house.  Anyway, what worries me is that my body hates it when I am cleaning with all these chemicals.  My nose is stuffy for days, my eyes burn, and my hands dry right out.  Seriously, chemicals are not good for anything.

I like that your post turned into one about air purifiers!  We use essential oils and diffusers in our home.  (I wish I could use them in the houses I clean.)  I might be able to talk some owners into purchasing an air purifier!  Thank you for the idea!

The symptoms are very common nowadays and I believe they could be as a result of these numerous toxins. The good news of air purifiers availability in the market outweighs the bad news. I only wish every institution will make efforts to install air purifiers in their premises. It would be pointless for us to have them in our homes only to catch something outside our homes. The Allerair  Air Purifiers sound like a good deal because it can cover a large space to purify and their ability to remove several pollutants .Thank you for the great tips on what to consider when buying air purifiers for multiple chemical sensitivities. 109. I totally agree, there’s a lot of indoor pollutants and we really have to be aware of the quality of the air we breathe. This is why you will hear people complaining about a sick house/ building syndrome or multiple chemical sensitivity. There are volatile chemicals around like cleaning products, fumes, paint, and other house/ building materials. I like the Blueair Classic especially since it is technology enabled and it is so handy, however it seems like it is best for small spaces only. What do you think of the Rainbow vaccuum cleaner (someone did a demo for us way back and it seemed great, but very expensive), Himalayan salt lamps (do they really work?), and even the Dyson fan air purifiers (are they really effective)? Compared to the ones you’ve shared, those seem to be really good in filtering chemicals in the air and seem to be very durable. I honestly have to look into this because I am concerned about improving the quality of indoor air especially when we move to our new place and there will be other homes constructed near us.

    • Thanks for your comment, unfortunately I don’t know anything about the vacuum cleaner you mention. I think Himalayan salt lamps and plants work to some degree as does the Dyson air purifier ( I actually have one). However, if you have multiple chemical sensitivities you really need one of these more powerful air purifiers that are manufactured using materials that will not cause further problems.

  111. Hi,

Interesting article, I advise people on how to naturally increase testosterone production. A major issue and cause of low testosterone is endocrine disrupting chemicals that disrupt the healthy hormone production. This leads to lowered testosterone production and these are often chemicals found in things like cosmetics, shower gels etc.

There are also chemicals that we breath in from things like air fresheners, weed killers, & cleaning products. A number of the side effects in addition to lowered testosterone production & hormone disruption sound similar to what air purifiers protect us from.

It sounds like this may be some of the same chemicals that we are looking at.

  112. Thank you for publishing such an informative article.  I’ve learned something new today.  Most of the time i am indoors as I am running an online business.  I battle with sinus and sore throat, to an extent that I keep sanutabs and throcain in my house.  I am also beginning to experience cognitive issues.  I never thought of using Air Purifiers as I have never associated my sicknesses with indoor pollution.  I thought I was safe from bacteria when I’m indoors.  You have opened my eyes, and I will begin to use the air purifiers.  The Austin Air Health mate Plus HM250 is the best for me.
